
Breaking News: Kirby Hocutt, Texas Tech Athletic Director, Dies in Car Accident
LUBBOCK, Texas — May 4, 2025 — The Texas Tech University community is in mourning following the tragic death of Kirby Hocutt, the university’s athletic director, who died early today in a car accident. Hocutt, 54, was a prominent figure in collegiate athletics, known for his leadership and dedication to Texas Tech.
According to local authorities, Hocutt was involved in a single-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 84 near Lubbock at approximately 3:15 a.m. Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the incident was reported but were unable to revive him. The cause of the crash is under investigation, and authorities have not released further details at this time.
Hocutt served as Texas Tech’s athletic director since 2011, becoming the 13th person to hold the position in the university’s history. Under his leadership, Texas Tech’s athletic programs achieved significant success, including multiple Big 12 Conference titles and appearances in NCAA postseason play. He was also instrumental in the development of the university’s athletic facilities and the enhancement of the student-athlete experience .
In addition to his role at Texas Tech, Hocutt was a respected figure nationally. He served on the College Football Playoff Selection Committee and was recognized as the Under Armour Athletics Director of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics in 2018 .(
