NorCal Legend Steve Lamson Named Grand Marshal of Hangtown Motocross Classic
The Hangtown Motocross Classic, one of the most iconic events in American motocross, has named Northern California native and racing legend Steve Lamson as its Grand Marshal for this year’s edition. The announcement comes as the event gears up to welcome fans, riders, and industry figures from around the world to Prairie City SVRA near Sacramento.
Steve Lamson, a two-time AMA 125cc National Champion, is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished and respected riders to come out of Northern California. With a professional career spanning over a decade and multiple wins to his name, Lamson’s selection as Grand Marshal is both a celebration of his legacy and a nod to the region’s deep motocross roots.
“This is a huge honor,” Lamson said in a press release. “Hangtown has always been a special place for me — it’s where I grew up racing and where so many memories were made. To be recognized like this, especially here at home, means the world.”
Lamson’s presence at the event will add a layer of excitement for longtime fans, many of whom remember his epic battles during the 1990s. He will be involved in various ceremonial duties, including the riders’ introduction, pre-race activities, and fan meet-and-greets. His involvement underscores the event’s commitment to honoring the sport’s rich history while embracing the next generation of stars.
Organizers of the Hangtown Motocross Classic emphasized Lamson’s contribution to the sport and to the Northern California motocross community. “Steve Lamson isn’t just a legend — he’s family to this event and this area,” said a spokesperson for the Dirt Diggers North Motorcycle Club, which organizes the race. “Having him as Grand Marshal brings a personal and historical touch to this year’s race.”
The Hangtown Motocross Classic is the oldest round in the AMA Pro Motocross Championship series, with a legacy dating back to 1968. Year after year, it draws thousands of fans and serves as a launching pad for motocross careers while celebrating the pioneers who paved the way.
With Steve Lamson leading the festivities, this year’s Hangtown promises to be more than just a race — it will be a tribute to a hometown hero and a celebration of motocross culture in its purest form. Fans are encouraged to arrive early, meet the legend, and be part of what promises to be a memorable weekend in Northern California motorsports history.
