Former Congresswoman Liz Cheney Tragically Passes Away While En Route to Speaking Engagement
May 24, 2025 — Washington, D.C.
Former Congresswoman Liz Cheney, a prominent figure in American politics and a staunch advocate for democratic principles, tragically passed away on Friday while en route to a scheduled speaking engagement in Denver, Colorado. She was 58.
According to a statement released by her family, Cheney suffered a sudden medical emergency aboard a private flight and could not be revived despite emergency efforts by onboard personnel. The aircraft made an emergency landing in Nebraska, where she was pronounced dead upon arrival at a local hospital.
Cheney, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, served as the U.S. Representative for Wyoming’s at-large congressional district from 2017 to 2023. She rose to national prominence as a leading Republican voice critical of former President Donald Trump and played a key role on the House Select Committee investigating the January 6th Capitol attack.
In a statement, President Joe Biden called Cheney “a courageous and principled leader who never shied away from speaking the truth, even when it came at great personal and political cost.”
Colleagues from both sides of the aisle expressed their condolences and paid tribute to her legacy. Senator Mitt Romney remarked, “Liz was a beacon of integrity and a true patriot. Her voice will be missed in the ongoing struggle to preserve American democracy.”
Cheney had recently been involved in educational and nonprofit initiatives, including founding a political action committee aimed at defending constitutional governance and the rule of law.
She is survived by her husband, Philip Perry, and their five children.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
