Vancouver Canucks Sign Top Prospect Tom Willander to Three-Year Entry-Level Contract
The Vancouver Canucks have secured one of their most promising young talents by signing Swedish defenseman Tom Willander to a three-year entry-level contract. General Manager Patrik Allvin announced the deal, which is set to commence in the 2025–26 NHL season, marking a significant step in the team’s ongoing rebuild and commitment to developing a strong defensive core.
Willander, selected 11th overall by the Canucks in the 2023 NHL Draft, has demonstrated exceptional skill and maturity on the ice. Standing 6’1″ and weighing 179 pounds, he is known for his strong skating ability and two-way play. Prior to joining the Canucks, Willander played for Rögle BK in Sweden, where he led all defensemen in goals, assists, and points during the 2022–23 season. He also represented Sweden at the 2023 IIHF World U18 Championship, recording eight points in seven games to help his team secure a silver medal.
Following his draft, Willander committed to Boston University for the 2023–24 NCAA season, opting for the collegiate route over playing in the Swedish Hockey League. This decision reflects his focus on development and readiness for the NHL. At Boston University, he continued to hone his skills, preparing for the next step in his professional career.
The Canucks’ decision to sign Willander to an entry-level contract underscores their confidence in his potential and their strategy to integrate young talent into the roster. The contract includes performance bonuses, which could further incentivize Willander’s development and contribution to the team.
General Manager Patrik Allvin expressed enthusiasm about Willander’s progression, stating, “Our group has watched him closely the past couple of seasons and have been impressed with his progression and growth in the NCAA. Now is the perfect time for him to take the next step and join our organization.”
Willander is expected to participate in the Canucks’ Development Camp from July 1–7, 2025, at the University of British Columbia. This camp will provide an opportunity for the coaching staff to evaluate his readiness for the upcoming season and for Willander to acclimate to the team’s systems and expectations.
As the Canucks continue to build for the future, the addition of Tom Willander represents a significant investment in their defensive prospects. His development will be closely monitored, with the hope that he will become a cornerstone of the team’s blue line in the seasons to come.
