In a heartbreaking turn of events, Kalani Sitake, the former head coach of the BYU Cougars football team, has tragically passed away following a high-speed car accident. The incident occurred late last night on a highway near Provo, Utah, where Sitake’s vehicle collided with another at high velocity. Emergency responders arrived promptly, but despite their efforts, Sitake succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Sitake, 49, had a distinguished career in college football. Born in Tonga and raised in Laie, Hawaii, and Provo, Utah, he played college football as a fullback for the BYU Cougars under coach LaVell Edwards. After a brief stint with the Cincinnati Bengals, Sitake transitioned into coaching. He served as the head coach of BYU from 2016 until his untimely death, becoming the first Tongan to lead a Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) program. Under his leadership, the Cougars achieved a 72–43 record and were recognized for their strong performances in the Big 12 Conference.
