Chelsea advanced to the quarter-finals with a 4-2 aggregate win despite a 2-1 home defeat to Legia Warsaw, having secured a 3-0 advantage in the first leg. Forwards Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson both started but struggled to make an impact before being substituted. Palmer, who was in strong form earlier in the season, has now gone 15 games without a goal, while Jackson is on a 12-match goal drought.
Head coach Enzo Maresca acknowledged the team is missing opportunities, saying, “Unfortunately, the goals we’re missing are very straightforward ones.”
Legia Warsaw took the lead after Filip Jorgensen fouled Tomas Pekhart, who converted the penalty. Chelsea drew level when Jadon Sancho set up Marc Cucurella for an easy finish. Cucurella appeared to score again before the break from a Christopher Nkunku assist, but it was ruled out for offside.
Despite seeming to regain control, Chelsea conceded again early in the second half when Claude Goncalves was left unmarked from a corner, and Steve Kapuadi helped his weak shot into the net.
Cucurella’s goal was his sixth of the season, and Chelsea now face Swedish club Djurgarden in the semi-finals.
